Structural interference comes from walls, floors, ceilings, or things like metal filing cabinets. However, these issues are rare. To help counter potential issues, each wireless sensor contains its own battery, which works great, especially in a power outage. Just make sure you stay on top of changing out your batteries so you know they’re always operating at peak performance. Additionally, wireless security systems are quite safe—to learn more, visit our blog post on wireless home security systems. If your home has been prewired for a security system, a hardwired option may be a better choice since the system will be easy to install. If you already know which provider installed the equipment, activating your system is simple—all that’s required is a phone call and maybe a tech visit to update the control panel. If you’d rather go with a different provider, installing and updating the system ought to be as straightforward as programming a new number into the control panel. In some cases, a converter or even a new control panel may be necessary, but as long as the wiring itself hasn’t been damaged, all the existing sensors should work with any provider’s equipment—all hardwired systems contain essentially the same technology. One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely.

The Alexa integration only works with the new SimpliSafe hardware, and the system can't be disarmed via voice for obvious reasons. With the monthly Interactive Plan, you can use SimpliSafe's Online Dashboard or mobile app to control the system, including arming and disarming it. The Dashboard also lets you view your System Event Log, change your PIN, assign up to four guest PINs, and choose an optional Duress PIN, to use when an intruder is coercing you to disable the alarm. Enter it, and the alarm will stop sounding, but SimpliSafe will immediately send the police. You can also tweak settings like siren volume, entry and exit delay time, and manage and rename sensors in the Dashboard. But now, with the new system, most of these controls are accessible on the keypad too, which is nice.

Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5 year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high level customer service. I was misinformed about my service cancelation when I spoke with agent Kelly M over chat through my vivint app. I was told to send an email and the sevice would be canceled within 30 days.
